My air conditioner suddenly stopped the other day and I bought a can of the freon with the indicator. My neighbor tried to put the freon in but doesn't seen to know exactually what to do. What is the proper way to install freon and how to read the indicator.

Are you sure it is low on Freon. If the guage works on the can and you are on the proper port you should be able to read pressure. It is possible that the relay that controls the AC is not working. This is inside the climate control relay module. It is a $200 part but can be repaired by soldering the loose relay. Check the forum for the proper way to repair this.
To add freon the compressor needs to be running so it will pull the coolant into the system or you need to pull a vacuum on the system to get it to work.
