Was this bad etiquette?

We were on the rural road back to my house, the wife, kids and myself. Came up on a Stealth who was actually going under the speed limit (35mph) on a road where I normally do closer to 50.

As I know the road well, I anticipated a short passing zone/straightaway coming up around the next corner, and dropped it into 2nd, revs just under 4k, perfect for full boost. Right as we made the curve I could see ahead was clear, so I put my boot to the wood and absolutely Warp-factor-9nd by him, shifting to 3rd right as I had a car length on him at 6500 rpm. Just for fun I took another couple of seconds and ran it well past 70, leaving him far behind.

Figuring I would leave him to his puttering, I saw him start to make up the distance. Told the wife "I think I bruised his ego."

As we came up to another very long straightaway, my wife saw he was making a run to pass me. I would have loved to drop gears and run him on this mile-long straight, but as my kids were in the back a more extended joyride did not seem viable, so I let him go past. He continued out of sight at well over 70.

He had been going 35 for over a mile as I had originally came up on him. Didn't seem like he'd had plans for going any faster. I wasn't intending to start anything -- should I have passed him a little more lightly? It really was a very short straightaway.

You passed him. Nothing wrong with that.

I think it's the being passed by a car full of wife and kids that probably set him off... haha.

I think its perfectly fine, I do it all the time. Bad etiquette would of been giving him the finger or the blinkers after you passed.

no you were fine you might have done it in a way that made him think you wanted to race but he just did the same thing you did except he knew he woulda lost so he kept it planted and left

It's one thing to be passed by another guy... sure ok.

But a family passing you by with the kids in the back watching Finding Nemo on the overhead DVD player, the mother up front doing some knitting and the father giving you a friendly wave as he motors on pass you... that'd make me go wtf... no way dude!!

I would have pulled the handbrake and did some mad drifting circles around him at 70mph while winking at his woman and then snagging her number out of her hand...

So you did ok...

That's why I bought the wagon -- the rear seats fold down for threesomes. We were close enough home for the kids to walk the rest of the way.
