1999 Ford Ranger 4cyl battery light stays on

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger and the battery light stays on. Change battery and still does it. Removed battery and runs on alternator and stays on. What could this be? Please help, Tim

Crapped out voltage regulator/alternator. Why are you running the truck with with no battery, dont you know that can damage your alternator? Not that it matters in this case.
