Need help fast with a Explr XLT 4WD brakes

Hello Group,

This is the fourth time that my Explr is going in for new Rotors. What the heck is going on. I now feel that I am getting raked over the coals.
How often have any of you been replacing rotors on these trucks. I have a 1999 XLT 4WD. I do mostly highway driving and am light on the pedal.

I have had my 96 for 2 years and replaced them once when I first got it. I am not a brake master but maybe check you cal. they might be bad? I don't really know its just a thought

Why are you replacing the rotors, is it due to corrosion, warping, cracking or minimum thickness?

The shop is claiming rust is the issue.

Hmmm, just rust or pitting? If it's just rust, then I'd like to know why they think it's a problem. Unless you get zinc plated rotors, you're going to get rust. Rust around the hub of the rotor and around the outer edge, where the pads don't rub, is perfectly normal. Well, even rust on the friction surface is normal after the brakes have been sitting, but it doesn't take much use before the brake pads wear that rust away.

Depends on the mechanic I guess. I don't recommend them unless they are so rusty that the are pitted or pulsate.

Sounds like you might want to get a new shop. Rotors don't just go to rust. Unless they are supplying you with crap to begin with. I use to deliver papers with my explorer and went through brakes mad crazy but rotors once every three months that's severe stopping wear. Rust somebody's taking you for a ride bud!

Or......You could by a hanes manuel, new rotors, calibers, pads, and do it yourself for cheaper and not have to worry about any shops ripping you off. Its very simple. Everyone here will walk you through it if it is your first time doing brakes. Then you know its done right, trust knowone. I have a 99 Sport. You should have disc all the way around so you dont have to mess with drums. Very easy job.

I think you're not only getting raked over the coals, you're getting roasted in there too. Can't imagine putting 4 sets of rotors on unless you run the pads down to the metal before you replace them. Rust is normal on the rotors.

Don't know what your mileage is but for comparison, my 99 XLT has 150K and 97 XLT has 180K and neither has had any of the rotors replaced. Lot of my driving is on winding mountain roads too.

My wife's 98 has 210,000 and replaced the rotor's once at 175,000. Find a new shop
