Im pretty knowlegeable when it comes to simple electrical stuff like this, but i want to make sure i get the right stuff as well. One: when i purchased my caprice the previous owner had wired a third brake light in the back window, but they wired it directly to the tailight brake lights, so when i turn on the left turn signal/hazzards, the third brake light also blinks, no big deal but i was just wondering what would have to be done for it to have its own circuit, i know id have to run its own switch by the pedal right? Second: how would i wire-up a electronic trunk release to the bracket on the trunk lid, and where would i get an electric trunk release kit for this car too?

The actual third brake light runs directly to the brake switch, bypassing the taillights. You can pick up a Haynes manual and look at the electric diagrams in the back to see how it's done.

For an electric trunk release, go to the junk yard for one. Thats where I got the one for my '84.

was a trunk release a luxury option on these cars? if so ive never seen one. or are all power trunk release mechanisms the same?

I don't know if they're considered luxury or not, but they're pretty much standard equipment on any 9C1. Mine even has the release located on the dash to the left of the steering wheel (actually under the headlamp switch)- convenient.

so all i'd have to do is look for an old 9c1 with the release kit.

I've seen it in that same spot in all Caprices (thats where mine is) except a 1990 Brougham, which had it in the glove box.

here is a so called universal one that i came across, i dont understand how it fits and gets mounted onto the caprice's trunk lock bracket though, where would it be mounted? any ideas or should i just get one from a scrap yard thats actually meant for a caprice? heres the pic of the universal one: http://www.slickcar.com/products/trunk.jpg
