I assume you have manual HVAC controls (by the 5-speeds mentioned). If so, your blower motor resistor is bad.

yeah it is manual 5 speed, only 3, 4, and 5 do work. where is the resistor located for 1 and 2.
thank you

The blower motor resistor (BMR) assembly controls all fan speed positions 1-5. It is one part and located behind the blower motor by the firewall. The blower motor needs to be removed in order to replace it.

you said it controls all fan speeds but 3-5 work perfectly fine is it still the resister. each blow at different speeds.

Typically still a blower motor resistor problem, however, it could be the climate control head unit but I doubt it. Replacing the BMR is cheaper and easier.

yes, the BMR has different electrical paths (depending on what position the switch is in) with different resistances that limit the amt of current that reaches the motor. This is what changes the speeds of the motor. Since the lower speeds have the highest resistance, they run hotter and fail first. Over time you will continue to drop speeds until only high is left (and it will fail eventually too as the relay is contained in the BMR also), until you change the BMR.

where can i find a BMR to replace all the resisters at once?
thanks for all the help.

thanks for all the help.

You can get it at a GM dealer parts department or aftermarket like Autozone. Az carries the Wells brand which is alot cheaper but I would use the GM/AC Delco. When you replace the BMR you are replacing all the resistors. The BMR controls blower positions 1-4 and 5 (hi-speed).

To replace it you must remove the blower motor. The BMR is located behind it next to the firewall.

Thanks to this post I just replaced my BMR. I had the same problem. The blower would not work on settings 1 and 2. I bought the BMR at Autozone for $20. It took about an hour to replace. The bmr is hard to get to. Remove blower motor from under passenger side dash and the BMR is located right behind it smashed up against the fire wall. My back is a little sore today from working upside down laying in the passenger footwell. Anyone over 200 pounds should take Yoga lessons before they attept this.
