ok so i think i got myself a bad rear main leak. About how much laybor time is it to fix it on a 91 camaro 305 rs 5speed? And i know it is a pain so do you think i should do it, or will it be better off having a shop do it?

Here in lies the problem, most shops charge book time. So if the book says it takes 3 hours to do the job, but a seasoned technician who knows the proper tricks, gets it done in 1 hour, you're still shelling out for the 3. Th'at's where shops make all their money. If you have a 2 piece seal, it can be done in car, but know that without a lift if can be a major pain in the a.... neck.

mine is a one piece main. after 86 they switched to the one piece mains. Can it still be done with the motor in? i work at a chevy dealer and i am in good with one of the TECHS so i will see if he will do it on the side maybe.

That would be the way to go but it is going to take a bit of time to do it because of what all has to come apart.

what you think about 4 hours? I don't have alldata any more so i can't look it up. Is it longer or shorter time to do it with a stick?

The time would be about the same for auto or manual since you have to remove the trans or move it aft far enough to remove the flexplate/flywheel. Then you look at the depth of the old seal in the housing, pry it out and install the new one to the same depth.
