I recently just purchased a 2000 Alero 3.4 V6 with approx 70k miles. Last week the gas gauge was near empty so I filled the tank up. I was surprised when the pump shut off at $28.00 (approx 6 gallons - I'm in Canada so Im doing the conversions). I thought the pump may have shut off early and the tank wasnt actually full so I tried to squeeze some more in....but I couldnt. When I got into the car I started it up the gas gauge went to full.
So yesterday my gas gauge was just about empty again....I had put 174 miles on this tank of gas.....when I filled the tank I was able to squeeze in $31.00 (approx 6.3 gallons).
What is going on here I wonder....is it just my gas gauge that is showing incorrectly when it reaches the "E" mark or is my tank really small. My car is a rebuilt car from GM....it was rear ended in 2001 and restored by GM....I wouldnt think they would put a really small gas tank in even if the gas tank was replace....that I'm not sure.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Tony

Some fuel level sending units in the tank go bad and cause inaccurate fuel readings and or dont work at all on 99-01 model N bodies.
I would think though that they would have replaced that since it was rear ended.... who knows though.
Also the tank should be 15gal(56.8L).
The low level light will come on when it gets down to about 2 gal
