Intake ? for 96 Corolla.

I was wondering what the hollow odd looking thing is on the back of the intake tube? I looks like it serves no purpose, it's hollow, nothing goes in it.

nothing goes in it.
well air does...lol...i not sure what it is i said screw it and took the tube off and put a highflow filter on
