Can speed wreck cruise control?

A couple months a go, I was cruising down the road with my cruse set to 60mph. As I came up on some cars, I passed them at about 95mph. When my speed went down to 60 again, it didn't catch and continue at 60mph like it usually does.
Well, I got where I was going, the next time I went on the freeway (couple weeks later), the cruse worked. It's worked for a month.
I went to another city last weekend. I had the cruse set at about 72mph. I had to speed up to around 95 to pass a car. The cruse quit working again.
Since both times it went out, I was going fast, could that have anything to do with it? Does this give any tip as to what is wrong?
What usually happens when a cruse control goes out?
The "Cruse Control" Light comes on, on the dash.
I tried several times and once I kind of felt it start to work but a second later it let go. Mine is a 1997.
Both times it quit I was going fast. Cruse Control Light is on when it doesn't work.
Thank you,
Chris.

No speed will not harm a cruse. It might and will get you a ticket. I know this from experience. ....???
From what I can tell from your post is that you switch is working because the light comes on. I too have a 97 but haven't had any trouble with the cruse. When the cruse is working does it keep the car at the speed set?
Regards
Dan

When it worked, it worked good. Kept me at the speed I set it.
I was thinking it was in the switch. I Never thought about since the "Cruse" lights up in the dash, the switch is working. Thank you for the tip on that one.
What usually goes wrong with a cruse? Is there an easy way to check something? An adjustment?
Thank you,
Chris.

I believe that the cruse is operated by electricty and vacuum. Sorry I don't know how to fix this. I currently don't know where my manual is ....hope to come acoross it soon.

97 should be electrically controlled only. One of the throttle cables will run to a small box mounted on the firewall.

Update:
I've been doing some traveling and took cruse for granted until it didn't work the last few times.
Getting ready to go in the morning. Went out to check oil, etc.... I looked down at the cruse to see if I can see anything wrong.
I saw a wire plug hanging. I looked and can see it's for the cruse. I plugged it in. Haven't tried it yet, but that must of been it.
The plug is pretty big and clicks in. Not sure how it could just come off.
I leaned when something goes wrong, even if you don't know anything about it, at least go check everything out. Start simple.
Wonder how much the dealer would of charged me?

I wonder if you may have a broken front left transmission mount, that would allow the engine to flex enough, to loosen the cruise control harness?

Just got back from my trip. When I got on the highway I was sad to find after I plugged it in, it didn't work.

I think if I take off the plug, put one of those lights when power is available to one of the wires, I should get the light to come on (power to the Cruse).
How can I check the cruse unit? I read somewhere to put a power checker to the unit (cruse on), hit the break. If the power goes off, that tells that the unit works. If that is true, I can't get power to it with the plug unplugged.
How do I troubleshoot this?
Thank you,
Chris.
