What is this?

Hey everyone,

Just wondering what in the world this is, the copper or black round piece under the wires? I'm not super inclined when it comes to engines so sorry if its a dumb question. It seems to be leaking oil and getting crap all over my engine.

im not positive but i think that's your fuel pressure regulator... not sure why it would be leaking oil though... unless its leaking gas and mixing with the grime.

i dont think its the fuel pressure regulator. Im not sure what it is but it is right on the oil pan. Its pretty close to the oil filter too, are you sure that the filter just isnt leaking onto it?

I believe that it could very well be gas mixing with the crap and grime on the block. It defiantly isn't anywhere near the oil pan or oil filter. Those are located on the bottom side of the engine where this is right up top just under the plug wires on the right hand side!

thats somethin with ur evap, I do believe, connected to it is that tiny hose?

not a big issue but the leak can cause a vaccume leak, high/low rpm idle

I think it has something to do with the exhaust/emmissions going back into the engine, could be exhaust build up w/ the oil/gas gunk that gets put out

Do find exactly where it is leaking tho. make sure that theeee.... I forget what its called lol, VAC valve? make sure it's not clogged or dirty... if it is, use some seafoam and just spray the valve out if you're not up to buying a new for for less than $2 or something lol

Thanks a lot Gir. I plan on replacing it as soon as I get done with finals this week. Just didn't wanna look like a complete moron walking into the shop and asking for the......???? haha. Maybe this will fix that stupid idle jump that I may be having.

Either an "O" ring or its just bad.

omg...i didnt even see the red arrow. I was looking at the bronze/gold colored part by the oil filter...which explains why i thought it was there. nvm

The fuel isn't blackish in color. The fuel regulators for some reason go bad from time to time and the internal sealing, well screws up. time to get a new one and replace it with fresh o-rings. The blackish oily nonsense around it, is the fuel and oily dust particles from your engine combing together and gunkin' 'ish up.

Yes gas when it comes from the pump is clear with a red or blu tint.
80% of the Cars with gas in thier tank is probly black in color , either due to debrie in the tank and or the oxidation that occurs in the aluminum fuel lines.
Plus it could be from the detrioration of the "O" rings them selves that cause the gas to discolor'.
Also the fuel would be more appearently black when the tank is not fully emptied regularly. ;)

... like I said, he needs a new FPR + "O" rings :lol:

This can be confermed with a fuel pressure check,
should be 41-47 psi w/ key on.

I'm assuming that the o-rings that your talking about are on both ends of the FPR. How much should this end up costing for the FPR and o-rings? Also, does anyone have a write up on replacing the FPR or is it as easy as clamping both ends and changing it out?

Thanks a lot everyone for your help. It's truley appreciated because on this college budget of mine... (wife budget as well :cwm27: ) I can't really afford to pay someone 10x the amount to fix something!

Just remember to relieve the fuel pressure from the shrader vavle on the pass side(looks like a vavle stem on your wheel, just bigger). Just use plenty of old rags to catch the excess fuel.

You can also pull the fuel pump fuse and run it dry, which I personaly dont like doing.

A good wrench and its off, theres just one big nut.
The "O" ring is inside that nut usually.
I'll see if I can find a pic....
