I have a 1989 k1500 350 5.7 automatic I am asking what is compatible with my transmission? I know its a 700r4 and they really suck but I still need the overdrive for all the highway driving I do. I am not looking to rebuild just want to replace. If someone close enough by has one let me know doesnt have to be rebuilt. You can email me at [email protected] but my question is what years and what vehicles can I change it with? I recently put in a 350 out of an 88 suburban with 30,000 miles on it. I found a 85 700r4 rebuilt from a suburban would that work?? Thanks for any help..

Any non-electronic transmission from behind a GM V8 will work

The 700R4/4L60, when properly set up, are far from junk. With a good reaction sun shell, input drum/shaft and the requisite amount of 3/4 clutch plates, along with a Kevlar 2-4 band and a good strong input planetary pinion set, can handle up to 700 lb. ft. of torque - on par with a TH400. Avoid years before 1985 as these have TH2004R input shafts and torque converters (27 spline) and have some teething problems.

I would, however, suggest a transmission with a build date newer than May 1986. These have an auxiliary valve body in them whose job is to smooth the transition from neutral into drive/reverse.

Your only other overdrive option is a TH2004R, and while these are good in even big cars, I wouldn't use one in a truck.

I have heard a lot of bad things about the 700R4 also, but I have had a 91 1/2 ton extra cab and I now own a 92 (I upgraded) step side. My experience with towing Boy Scout trailers all over Texas, Louisiana & Arkansas for the past 9 years is that the 700R4 is bullet proof. Keep the fluid clean and the temperature down and she will serve you well.

Up to 93 or 94 (can't remember which year) the 700R4 is the same as the 4L60, GM just changed the name. Beware of the 4L60E, she is not the same and won't graft into your truck.
