Boxster Drift Machine...sort of...

Who needs 24 hours to build a model when you can build one in about 8 hours? I combined a desire to build something in a minimal amount of time, but still look like a halfway decent model. I sifted through the stack and kept coming back to the Revell Boxster snap kit. For whatever reason I thought it would be amusing to see what the Maisto 356 wheels just removed from my RS60 would look like.

I actually liked it

So off I went; started this Saturday at 7:05 pm, in 3 hours I had done a layer of silver, dried, wetsanded, applied panel lines, reshot silver, applied clear, let dry, wetsanded, reclearcoated. I shot the interior pieces in a better shade of red than molded. The chassis is just flat black. All sub assemblies were painted by the time I quit at about 12:15 am. In 2 1/2 hours on Sunday morning I did final assembly and detailing. I needed this build to keep me from starting my LeMans car too fast :D

So what do you think? Crazy? Cool? :screwy: I think it would be a lot of fun to drive. I don't think a 356 would be flattered at all w/Boxster rims, but the 356 wheels/tires seem to fit this car in this color scheme pretty well.

well the wheels are to skinny, bit the rims rather suit the boxster!

wow, I must say, I'm impressed! 8 hours you say? that is a quick build! I bet if you just put some wider tires even without wider rims (like a 215 tread width in 1:1) it would look much better.

great job! I like how you applied the panel lines under the final color coat. it turned out quite realistic

I don't like the rims at all. It looks like there is a body of a boxster kitcar on an old-school 356 or Beetle chassis. And then they're skinny, in my opinion it needs something more modern and wiiiiiiiide.

Otherwise, everything without the rims is as always, superb. Excellent paintwork, superb panellines and the interior looks like i would want to sit in it.
Not fond of the side mirrors tho, they look strangely big and undetailed. rear lights also, they look like they're not transparent?

But on the whole (after taking a good long look at the model ) it's a nice interpretation on how the boxster actually was a new incarnation of the classic spyder porsche (550), just not fond of some little details (that are inherent to this quickkit) and the rims!

Superb work for only 8 hours.

strangely enough, with the "classic" wheels, the boxster starts to look a bit more like the 550.

Thanks; no doubt that people might not completely understand where I was going w/it and that doesn't bother me at all. If it were a real 1:1 it would be far better if the tire contact patch were 2-3X wider, and if the kit wheels/tires were wider it would look better as well. But that would double the amount of time spent building a quick/fun model which for me was like a short full-throttle burnout of my brain's gray-matter carbon buildup :smokin:

The Revell kit is bog-simple. It didn't come w/clear taillights to render the backup and turn signals in Tamiya-like fashion, so I had to settle for something else.

Somebody stop me before I do a Gmund coupe inspired Cayman

I dig the idea, and like mentioned before-it looks like a 550!!! If it were 1:1 I am sure there would be some 275's on it or something, and lowered, and sportier suspension, and engine mods, and,..........Oh, that is why this was a quick build!!!  I like.

I like the 'old school' look of the wheels. Wider is better, though. Nice 8 hour build.

I will NOT stop you from going full out on the Gmund coupe Cayman. That would be the coolest build ever!

Love that silver.
Skinny tires would make it more fun to drive!

Thanks for the comments!

I took a trip to Discount Tire aka my Fujimi 356A Speedster kit to get the other set of Maisto 356 wheels I had (to try under another project), and found two of them had modern radials. Remembering when I tried these wheels on a Revell PT Cruiser, I checked that kit, and found two sets of stock PT Cruiser tires (and no desire to build a stock PT Cruiser...ever).

Handling problem solved immediately :D
Project Caymund just got a bit more feasible...

Stock Maisto tire on left, Revell PT Cruiser tire on right. I do believe this would transform the handling just a bit ;)

Oddly enough I like the look of the oldschool rims on it. IMO, keep it the way it is. Although in keeping with the speedster look... I just think you need to lower it a bit. Then make the rear squat, like on the 550 spyder.

To each his/her own:grinyes: I happen to like it!! I could actually see it as a "tribute" model offered by Porsche to recall where the inspiration for the modern car originated :sunglasse. Not all Porsches are fire-breathing high-horsepowered monsters.:)

To me is quite cool!!!

Not my genre but ther's a kind of harmony, balance, the game work.

Just a tech. curiosity: how kind of clear would cure and be ready for sandpaper in few minutes also in a dehydrator? Thanks, not only curiosity to be honest ;) :D

The silver/clear are Tamiya TS gloss aluminum and TS clear. The first coats were airbrushed, the final coat of clear was straight from the spray can. The first light coats were able to be sanded in well under an hour. I used 3200 grit micromesh to wetsand the color coats. Generally I wetsand the top coat w/3600 or 4000 and then hit w/Tamiya coarse, regular, and finish compounds.

In thin coats it dries very rapidly, especially w/the dry heat of a dehydrator. I can wetsand a heavy wet coat somewhere between 2-3 hours after application. If I did this w/o the dehydrator it would take overnight.

Mhhhh, I'm not 100% persuaded but I have to believe you seeing your results. I love the TS13 too but I leave to cure for weeks, yep the day after it's dry at touch but to my experience if I polish it an appreciable orange peel come out next days... well I have to try, first to wetsand any coat and than to purchase a dehydrator, thanks a lot.
