tranny

97 taurus, this one starts great, but it takes a while for the tranny to 'kick-in'. Have to get the roms up to 1500, then wait 3 - 4 seconds to start moving. Same if I switch to reverse. I can only get first gear. Once it's in gear there's little or no slippage. I'm suspecting the pump is bad or weak and I'm not building up enough pressure. How do I check it and what pressures should I expect?

Other possibility is the torque converter, but if it worked at all, I should get 2nd and 3rd gears, etc.
