2000 grand prix 3100 ses light on

cant read no code wont even turn it on...????? help....

engine light is on and stays on took it to autozone and wont give any codes wont even turn the scanner on so we looked the fuses over and all of them are good so what would it be any help would great.........:banghead:

The data link port gets it's 12 volts from the cigarette lighter fuse so check that out again. Is the cigarette lighter working?

What is the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) you are getting?

EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) is an emissions control device that reduces NOx (nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide). When commanded by the PCM module (computer) after certain parameters are met it opens and passes hot exhaust gases into the intake system to accomplish reducing NOx for emissions control.

If your code came up "insufficient EGR" it might not be the EGR valve. It might be a clogged passage between the EGR valve and the throttle body. These passages clog up on high mileage vehicles and the computer senses the lack of egr gasses at the oxygen sensor when you decelerate.

Usually it is not too hard to clean out the passage with throttle body cleaner (removes carbon real good) and a coat hanger. I would pull the upper plenum when doing this if it were my vehicle to keep the residue that you break free out of the engine. Some folks might just remove the egr valve and throttle body and clean the passage with the upper plenum on the car.
