For fuel conservation purposes, what is better to do? Hold out a gear longer and depress the X lightly or shift early and press the X harder? This is cosidering that under both circumstances you are accelerating at the same rate.

Sorry, I made "x" short for Acc. or accelerator(pedal). X is a common term like everywhere but America. I don't know why.
