'99 Suburban Fuel Issues

I have a '99 Suburban w/ a 5.7 liter engine and just over 160,000 miles on it.

It started acting up on the way into town yesterday. It was OK at constant speed until I tried to accelerate. When attempting to accelerate, it would sputter and lose power. On the way back home, it couldn't get up a significant hill and died trying. I restarted, it stalled turning around. I restated again and started back down the hill and it died on the way down. I coasted into a friend's driveway an parked it for the night.

I tried to start it tonight and it won't fire. If I wait a few minutes after having tried to start and try it again it might fire once. I tried replacing the fuel filter without success. The fuel pump is running, but I have not checked pressure. We tried pouring a bit of gas into the throttle body and it started and kept running. I turned it off and immediately re-started several times and it restarted every time. I then turned it off and let it sit for ten minutes and tried restarting and it wouldn't fire.

Any ideas????

U need to do a pressure test.Sounds like the pump. 5 -10 out of range will kill ya. First things first.Check the pressure.

Hard to start cold.
Check cold start fuel pressure.
Check engine running fuel pressure.
Check engine running on the road fuel pressure.
Then shut it off and watch for fast leak down.
Pinch off at rubber part or block off return line and check full pressure.
Later V6 and V8 gm engines should have 60-66 fuel pressure.
Cold start should be 64-65 lbs of pressure.
If you do not have full fuel pressure on a cold start the injectors will not squirt fuel.
Do not leave home without it.
Engine running should be 60-66 lbs pressure depending on engine load.
Full pressure with return pinched off should be 75-85 or more.
And if it has a fast leak down after shut off you have a leak.
Post back fuel pressure readings.

Sounds like fuel pump and stay away from an aftermarket pump.Check the fuel pressure,GMs will not run below the specified fuel pressure.Aftermarket fuel pumps are junk, put 6 fuel pumps in one Chevy pickup from Carquest made by Airtex.Get one from the dealer,an AC Delco fuel pump although they are more money.

this is for all chevys and gms with an inline air sensor especially if you are running KN filter

step #1 auto parts
one can air sensor cleaner
step #2 tools
screwdriver flat
step #3
disconnect plastic air hoe in between the air filter and the throtle body
step #4
disconnect an aluminumhousing from the air intake once you get it apart the inlet has a mesh screen
step # 5 most important
on a work bench not on the vehicle
step #6
follow instructions on can it is worth the $ 5 new fuel pump is about $350 plus labor
