96 pontiac grand am
2.4 litre 4 cyl. fuel injected
manual 5 speed trans.
ABS,P/S,A/C
miles: lots
im hearing a loud deep howling noise when i only turn left from 10-15 mph and faster. it does not make that sound when going straight or turning to the right or while sitting still at an idle turning left or right. im not hearing any clicking or clunking which would lead me to my cv joints. i was told it was probably my wheel bearing. so i changed out the left side hub assembly since thats the side im hearing the noise from but to no avail (still there). i also feel it in my steering wheel.it almost feels like its my power steering pump but it only does it while im moving and there's no effort change in steering the car. could it be my "Rack & Pinion"? my power steering fluid is awful dirty looking too (brown)
any ideas
Thanks

Welcome to AF!!
I would change the other bearing as well. Does the car make the noise when you sit still and turn the wheel or only when you are moving? If it only happens when the car is moving then the wheel bearing is probably the issue. If it does this when the car is sitting still then I would check the steering as the pump may be going bad or you have a problem with the rack itself.

"sitting still" it makes no noise. even when i turn the wheel both directions. it doesnt make any noise even while driving straight. but the instant i barely turn the wheel to the left it starts the deep howling noise. when i turn right it stops.im starting to wonder if im being fooled by the noise coming from the left side and actually its being echoed there from the right side bearing (hub assembly) that i havent replaced (i only replaced the left side) my tires are brand new,if that question came to mind.
what do you think?
thank you for your reply, much appreciated

It's clear that is not the steering problem...more like a wheel hub bearing issue...check again both sides. Remember....never change something that comes in twin only in one side (brake, tire, wheel hub, etc).

Thank You very much. i'm going to replace the right side tomorrow. i also feel your correct, but befor i jumped to something else i wanted to hear some output although i didnt want to go changing another hub assembly if i didnt need to,but i agree with what you say i myself know you dont usually do one side . both or none-i guess i was looking for a quick fix, money's a little tight right now
thank you
