We are looking at possibly buying a 2000 Jetta GL for our daughter. It has the 2.0L with 108,00 miles. Looks like a very clean vehicle and well maintained. Have heard there are reliablilty issues with the Jetta. Any info that could help us on our decision would be appreciated.

I would pass if its a 2.0L. There are too many issues associated with a 2.0L and automatic tranmission.

I have a 2000 Jetta GL (which I married into) with 113,000 miles and the fun is just beginning. I am dumping hundreds of dollars into it every couple of months. The window motor broke ($700), max airflow sensor and cat converter went out ($400), the acceleration sensor went out last week ($300). I am about to replace the inner tie rods ($400) also. I would strongly discourage it. www.myvwlemon.com (http://www.myvwlemon.com)

hahah vw's are not lemons.... just because a 7yr old car needs $$$ put into it doesnt make it a lemon. At least its not as bad a all chrysler vehicles, needing power steering racks replaced at 35k miles... caravan front brakes replaced every 22k miles.

I would disagree :disappoin . My GF has a 00 Jetta. She drives all highway with it, but still stuff breaks or goes bad. Sludge in the engine, power locks intermitently working, timing chain, cup holders broke......and day before yesterday it over heated while she was driving to work. Dealership says its the water pump and while they were in their they found something was broken on the oil pump...An oil pump cap something.
You want reliable, go buy a Honda or Toyota. You want a kick ass warranty, go buy a Hyundai....You want something tuff, buy a Ford or Chevy.
Don't buy a VW. :shakehead
