so i just replaced my fuel pump a few days ago in my '85 Tbird turbocoupe. well heres the problem. the car will start up fine. then when it is just idling i will hear the fuel pump making noise, like if the tank was low on gas and you can hear the pump sucking gas. well, when it does that, the car kinda sputters then eventually dies out, but will start fine eachtime after. Could it be a defective pump maybe, or computer problems??? I also did the filter at the same time as the new pump. the car has gas in it but it dies everytime i let it sit there for a few minutes. then when im driving, i have no problems on take off but when it hits 3000rpm, it cuts out the fuel or something. i had some ideas like fuel regulator or a sensor maybe or if i need to adjust the timing or maybe the cam. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. i just dont want to take things apart thats not necessary.
Thank you,
Larry

Without seeing the car it's hard to tell but if the fuel pump starts making strange noises at the same time the car sputters and dies then that is a good indication that something is wrong with the pump. Is the screen on the pump clean? Before you remove it check the voltage at the pump and see if it drops when the pump starts making noises.

You might also want to check your fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

Ya i tested it last night and it was reading around 75lbs. then before it would make the noises it would rapidly drop pressure then the car would stall. then i took the fuel pump relay off and just jumped the wires to test it that way to see if it was grounding out somewhere but i think its the pump or a bad ground in the pump. even 75lbs seems kinda high. When i tested the pump it lost pressure but never turned off. it just kept going down then back up then down. So im thinking the pump is over heating and shuts off?????????? and one more question, the the "Sock" on the end of the pump suppost to be on there all the way pushed up or just half way on? going to take the tank off tomorrow i guess to see what the problem is. Thanks for your help guys.
