welcome to the forum.
when you lower the car you should get new shocks if for no other reason than that the shocks that are already on there are around 16 years old and could stand to be replaced.
when you decide on springs, the company that sells them should also sell shocks that would work for that application.
as for the engine, you are going to hear this a lot.
dont waste your time building a 305.
you can throw thousands of dollars at it and still be left with less power than if you got a 350 for the same money.
350s are pretty easy to find (especially if you are in the midwest i hear)

Agreed, thats what I ended up doing and I have no regrets. But if you only looking to do some top end work as opposed to a complete rebuild then keeping the 305 would workout. Headers are universal to all SBCs. See This Thread (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=708425), Slilicon and I have an abundance of information regarding headers and some on cams there.

As far as posi is concerned, you might already have it. Look on the underside of the deck lid, you should see an RPO/SEO label (it will say on it; "Service Parts Identification, DO NOT REMOVE). Look for a G80. If you see a G80, you already have limited slip (Positraction). If you don't have it and want to add it, simply replace the open differential carrier with a limited slip diff carrier, just reinstall your gears. This might not be a job for a novice though, there is a fair amount of setting up on a diff once you replace the carrier. You probably have a 7.5" rear axle assembly. You can replace this with an 8.5" out of a 9C1, just make sure you have the proper driveshaft (the 7.5" driveshaft is about an inch longer).
Inasmuch as the engine is concerned, sorry Charlie. We've beat this dead horse one too many times. It is what it is - you want fast and cheap, pick a 350. If you want fast but money is no object, and you want to keep the #s original, then build that 305 - but keep in mind that a 300HP buildup on a 350 is about $2,000 while the 300HP buildup on a 305 is going to put you in the $3500-4000 range. 300HP is not a lot for the 350 - most will do this with minimal mods, while a 300 horse buildup on a 305 can be done but is asking a lot. Go down to the local Pick'n'Pull and grab yourself a COMPLETE 350 engine along with an ECM for around $200 out the door. Drop this in, and you have your performance upgrade for under $400 (including fluids and other expenses).

A completely stock 350 will amaze you in how much of a power difference there is as compared to the 305.

I'm lucky, I just walk out to my garage and pick a 350 from the herd. I am running low on big blocks though.
Agreed that a fresh 350 even in stock form will probably do you well. I tell everyone this, check your local emissions laws before you start! Nothing is worse than putting a lot of money, time and effort into a project that is going to be a hassle to get inspected.
Consider a GM crate motor too, shop around and you'll get one for the right price. And all the hard work is done for you.

well for the most part, b-bodys from the 80's dont have to work too hard to pass emissions even with a crate motor.
i was going to get mine regisereed as an antique vehicle, but decided not to

Actually, here in Arizona, cars from the 80s are actually subject to some of the strictest tests, we're on the IM147 test.
