That answered my own question then. I knew they weren't bison, but couldn't figure out what they were.

Indeed, water buffalo to be exact. The best part is the lion being catapulted into the air, freaking unbelievable.

Actually, if we're going to get super correct, they're Cape Water Buffalo.

FYI, Buffalo are one of Lions favorite meals but also one of the hardest to bring down, do some research on hunting Cape Buffalo and you're be amazed how dangerous they are.

Yup, cape water buffalo, one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. Not really an animal you would expect to be so bad ass, but so is the hippo

Animals are awesome. Especially when you realise how badass some of them are.

Being surrounded and charged by a herd of angry elephants is quite an eye opener

You know your knee deep in shit when you have a pride of lions fighting with crocodiles over who gets to eat you, and they are playing tug of war with your body...

I think if you're in that situation you'd wish you were only knee deep.

Imagine how well us fragile human beings would fare in the wild.

pretty well considering that's where we started and now we own the world and could destroy nearly every living thing on it if we wanted.

That may be where we started, but "civilized" man has become soft and dependant on technology for survival on this planet. Most of today's people wouldn't survive if they couldn't go to the supermarket and buy food. How many of today's people could go to the wilderness, track down and kill an animal for food (using only claws/fangs), and avoid becoming a meal for a lion or even a pack of wild dogs? Of course we could use guns or bombs or whatever to kill everything on the planet. But I'm talking about a human being - not technology, against the wild.

We are food to most predatory animals:

I hear several stories like this every year when the weather gets warm and people leave the safety and comfort of civilization to "enjoy" the wilderness.

Going into the wild without proper preperation leads you back into the food chain. Its the people who do not realize this end up being snack food.

i don't think that's fare, we are more intelligent than animals (well most of us anyways) and we use our intelligence to survive. of course if we were to use brute strength against animals we'd probably lose but if we're allowed to use our cunning and tool manufacturing (from raw materials, not gins and knives and stuff, i'm talking sticks and stones) then sure most of the civilized world would die but we'd survive and we'd eventually build up to what we are now.

True indeed.

On topic: We'd have to make a pretty damn big spear to kill one of those water buffalo.

mmmmmm....buffalo jerky.
