Today I was doing some yard work and shifted my 2001 2500 Silverado into 4 low. When I was done, it wouldnt shift back into 2wd. I have been getting a "service 4wd" light on and off for a while but since I hardly ever use it, I wasnt worried about it. Right now I don't have any of my 4wd controller button lights on. Any Ideas on what it might be?
Here is what I did to get it going down the road:
I pulled the actuator motor off the side of the t-case and shifted it into high range manually.
Removed the front drive shaft
Will this hurt anything for the time being?

Just so you know we're looking!! Need to put a scanner on it that can read the tx case DTC's. Post them back. Could be the switch assy, encoder/motor, control module, wiring??????????????? The warning light came on for a reason and now that reason has reared it's ugly head and now you need to "worry about it".

You might try backing up a ways to see if your transfer case might be bound up. Things such as differences in turning radius, tire sizes and gear ratios can cause torque bind. If it's in a bind it won't let the gears change, seen it happen before.

no 4x4 lights on and stuck in 4x4 99% chance its your encoder motor, when it happened to me i was in 4x4 high, and no lights on the buttons either...... i had it manually switched out of 4x4 till i could find a new encoder. dont go to gm unless you want to pay 1200.00 plus for it. i found a good used one for 200., still working perfect. just another one of gm`s crappy parts on these trucks.
