FPR and Fuel Filter

I have a 2002 Z-71 with the 5.3. The truck has always started hard and after some searching I have learned this is caused by a faulty FPR some times. Now I am new to Chevy and do not know where my FPR is or ever what it looks like. Can anyone help me here? From what I;ve read it seems like a common problem. Also, I believe it is time to change my fuel filter while I am at it. Where would that be located as well. Any pictures would help greatly.

As far as the FPR, I dunno, but the filter is in the frame rail near the back of the cab on the driver's side. It is about a 5 - 10 minute operation to change the filter, too. I would start with it and see if it helps.

Left side of engine on fuel injector rail.
A quick test is to pull the vacuum off and look for fuel in it.
Also a good time to check fuel pressure.

OK I located the filter, any sugestions as to which brand to replace it with?

Delco/Champion Labs, Wix, or Hastings are all good quality filters. Fram and all their house-branded clones are highly suspect. I believe NAPA is supplied by Wix for most of its filters, but I'm not positive of that.

Have you ever changed the filter? If not, the lines could be tough to get off. Get yourself a set of flarenut wrenches for the job. They'll grip better and there is less of a chance of stripping or deforming the nuts on the ends of the fuel lines.

if your truck has the same filter problem as mine be ready for some cussing. the lines were bent at the factroy. after i gently put the bend strate the filter lined up with the line and threaded right in. next filter change will be a snap.

You might want to check the fuel pressure first before anything.GMs will not run under the specified fuel pressure.Stay away from aftermarket fuel pumps,they are junk and will not cover under warranty 99.9% of the time.Go with one from the dealer.
