96 Silhoette suddenly sputtering, stalling, and surging

We have a 96 Silhoette with a 3.4 L engine. While driving home the engine began to sputter and lose power like is was misfiring really bad. We pulled off the highway and it simply died. I attempt to restart the engine a couple of times, but it would only sputter and stall out. I considered that it might have jumped time just enough to cough so I had it towed home. Just after it came off the tow truck it started and seemed to be okay, but then I notice that, (while in park) when I rev the engine up it does okay until it reaches just under 4000 RPMs and then begins to cut out. It keeps cutting out and reving repeatedly. If I press on the gas pedal further it acts like it is being supressed. I have not been able to check the fault codes because the harness connector below the steering column does not appear to be the same configuration as the one in the repair manual. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am mechanically inclined and make all of my own repairs, but this is one I have not encountered until now. Thanks!

sounds like a bad fuel pump

I got ahold of a code reader and two codes were displayed. Mass air flow sensor and muliple engine misfires, obviously caused by a faulty mass air flow sensor. Fuel pump is fine.

you might be able to get a good one at a junkyard as i hear they are pretty high new.
