Ecotec oil filter..

What brand drop in/cartridge oil filter is everybody running on their 2.2L? What's the cost? Really, the only two I've seen people talk about are dealership AC Delco's and Frams. I don't care for Fram oil filters due to a problem I had years ago & I don't like what they charge for oil filters. What about the 1-1/4" socket needed to remove the threaded plastic cap on the oil filter housing. I've seen'em on eBay. Any other good sources?

If you plan to change your oil yourself, on a regular basis, I would recommend one of the 'tool truck' companies such as Matco or Mac. They can be had new for around $10 US. If you use a regular 1 1/4" socket, they tend to be a bit tall, so you can't unscrew the cover all the way without getting bound up on the intake, but even a craftsman 1 1/4"
socket should cost a bit less than the 'ecotec' socket

Thanks b-h. I actually picked up an Ecotec oil filter socket from eBay a few weeks ago for ~$10 mailed to the door. It's a Lisle Corporation socket. It's machined aluminum, 3/8" drive, made in the USA, and works like a charm.

I use the Wally World Super Tech 9018 which you can get for a great price and the quality is the same as the other high priced competition.

Yep, check my post here: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=716729 The wally world and Fram are the exact same filter. Word has it these Bulgarian made filters are pretty good. I'll probably stick with the AC Delco though. It looks/feels well made, it's what comes installed from the factory, the price is right and best yet, it's made in the USA.

Dealer gave me 6 OEM filters when I took delivery. Guess I know what I'm using for the next few years.

Man do you have a nice dealer! I bought a filter when I came back to pickup my floor mat set that took 2 weeks to get. Had to buy the floor mats too.:banghead: Do you notice any startup noise with your new Cobalt?

Hi Joel,

No noise yet but it only has 30 miles on it. I started it cold twice if you can call 75-80 degrees cold.

I did go to a few lots to see if I could get any to have a cold start clatter and did with one that had about 40K miles on.

From what I've been able to witness it takes miles and certain oils seem to be a bit more prone to startup noise. I'll be running 5W-30 Pennzoil Platinum once I go thru a couple fast dino oil changes. The Pennzoil is one I've not heard or know of anyone that's had any issues.

Per a dino oil, the new Havoline with Deposit Shield has shown good results in several engines that I've seen. It has a fair amount of Moly, which should help coat things a bit & BTW is what I'll be using for my first oil change around 1,500 miles, then to the Pennzoil syn around 4,000.

Per the filters. This dealer usually figures in a free oil change when you buy a new car. Since I do all my own minor maintenance I asked for an equal value in filters and it was given 6 with no questions asked.

Yep, you can't beat Pennzoil or Havoline oils. You must be a BITOG'er as well?:uhoh: I've been hooked on Kendall GT-1 (Conoco-Phillips) 5w-30 for a year or two now. I can get it by the case for just over $1/qt a few times a year. Not a bad price for a synth blend. As far as startup noise goes, mine is very subtle, and lasts about 2sec upon cold startup. A very slight rattle. The 4.2L atlas I6 in my 2005 trailblazer had a similar (but different) startup noise and I had a piston slapper 1998 GM 4.3L that had it's own unique thud-thud-thud.:banghead:
