PCV System Question

Hi folks, My car's engine is a 2.0L Split Port. Here's my question: Is there some way to tell if the PCV System is working properly?

The PCV Valve DOES rattle when it's shaken. However, the rubber hose elbow going into the valve cover was collapsed so I don't think it allowed air to pass. I just bought this 2002 Escort (with 59,000 miles), so I don't know anything at all about it's history, except that I think it's maintenance was severely neglected. (it's had so many problems already that I'm pretty sure I made a mistake buying it.)
By the way, the car is an SE, with Auto transmission and A/C.
Thanks very much for any thoughts!

That particular elbow-hose is a piece of crap by design ... you're right, it should not be collapsed but every Escort/Tracer I've seen with a few Kmiles on it has a collapsed hose. Just replace the hose and go from there ... Replace the PCV valve if there is any question about its performance ... you depend on this thing to keep piston blow-by vapors out of the crankcase.
