Hey folks. I have a 1990 Town Car with 125,000 on the dial that needs some work. The vehicle runs fine but I sense the tranny is beginning to go and I have been searching all morning to try and find a replacement transmission. My understanding is this in the only 199x year that the 5.0 Ford engine was utilized and my background is in GM products so i am trying to figure out what transmissions will bolt up to it.
I am additionally looking to retube the exhaust and am even looking for headers (if they exist).
The real reason for this search is I am looking for a tow vehicle for my camaro to and from the track and I figure this nice big Lincoln (that I already own), with a few modifications (new tranny, tranny cooler, trailer hitch) could probably pull just as easily as an older pickup and since I am familiar with the vehicle and it has a nice sound system and the body and interior are in great shape, that I would rather use a vehicle whose history i know about rather than an unknown...
Thanks in advance for any info or assistance. :)

The transmission is a AOD (Automatic OverDrive). A rather ubiquitous trans that was used on quite a few Ford models throughout the mid eighties to early ninties.
If your going to replace it stick with one from 1988-1991. And also you can use one from a Grand Marquis/Crown Victoria as they are the same car under the sheetmetal.
The weak spots on these transmissions are in the form of a little bushing and you can learn more about it here (http://www.lincolnsonline.com/tech/00052.html)
