A/C Question

I have a 1997 Grand Prix LE. I have a issue with my AC. It has no leaks, the compressor turns on, but no cold air. When I had the system drained I put one tank of R124, and the gauge was reading over charger. My compressor is also making a noise as well. Does the compressor need to be replaced. Any help would be great.

Thanks
Ernie

P.S. Please help It it 100+ where I live :(

your car should require about 3 12oz cans of R134-a refrigerant and 6-8 oz of compressor oil. If it shows overcharged after only one can, there is a blockage in the system or a compressor issue. Since your compressor is making noise, I think it to be your problem (especially if you didn't add oil when adding refrigerant). If you decide to spend the money to replace the compressor, also change the accumulator/receiver drier and orifice tube/filter to avoid metal particles from the bad compressor from getting in the new one.

Would it be a good idea to rebuild it? If so what is the best way to get the kit??

Rebuild what and what kit? Just go with Rich's suggestion. It could be a compressor but proper A/C diagnostics should be run to determine if it is bad by comparing the low and high port readings against typical A/C repair charts like in the FSM. Otherwise, it is just a guessing game. In addition to the compressor, if bad, the accumulator should always be replaced. Also, if the refrigerant charge is low the compressor will produce a motorboating sound.
