Tracker runs out of gas with two gallons left

My 94 tracker has quit on me two times in the past 2 months. Acts like it is out of gas, and only happens when I'm getting low on gas. I know it isn't out of gas because when it did it yesterday I was near a station and filled it up with only 8 gallons. I coasted into town with the engine off for a few minutes then started it and drove the 100 feet to the station. Same first time but was hard to say for sure because I got some gas from a nice farmer.

Is there some kind of screen in the tank that would keep the last two gallons from flowing out at a normal speed?

My 92 has a screen at the end of the pick up tube in the tank. Could be yours is clogged, or it could be that your pick up tube is bent. Its interesting that it stalls out after using 8 gallons, perhaps the fuel has gone to the other end of the tank, like going up or down a hill.

Also, are your positive on the fuel tank capacity? My '92 has a 9 gallon tank and I would never run it down to that last gallon if I could help it. (I say would because I did run it low on oil and we're in the process of replacing the crank and bearings :shakehead )

pretty sure about the tank...
08/01/2006
254.80
9.431

that 9.431 was the amount of gas I put in and it has never quit on me in 12 years and 276,000 miles... until recently. When it did quit on me I got about 1 gallon less into it afterward and about 238 miles out of that tank (thats what the center number is). I'm wondering about a weak pump... maybe starting to cavitate due to slosh of air then can't catch back up... or maybe the bottom part of the strainer clogged up and can't get the last of the tank.

Guess I should have looked at the tank first. Not many thing could be solved that way... but this could. The front tank brackets were rusted through and broken off. That let the tank set on the skid plate. there is only one front bracket that holds the skid plate to the frame and the added bouncing and weight of the tank broke it off. that left the front of the gas tank hanging down, giving me a little reserve capacity that the fuel pump couldn't get to. I guess it saves gas though! I should market it... "Away have gas in your tank with this amazing invention... What would you expect to pay form never having an empty tank again?"

bad 0-ring on pickup tube.
pull it and inspect it carefully.

btw , the fuel pump is fuel cooled and fuel lubricated.
running it dry is completly not a good idea.
2 gallons is as low as you should ever go.

I always try to keep all my autos with TBI for EFI FI at 1/4 tank or above ( never lower).

my jeep 99 when making left turns on 1/4 tank sucks air.
not good to do that.
so I stopped making left turns, hahahah

I feel for you guy. I too have been on the side of the road. I had 1/8 tank of gas anyway that is what the guage told me. I now fill up at 1/4 tank or before. I have a geo metro, gauge indicate that I should be sucking air but runs and it too has 2 gallons left in the tank. All in All I fillup at 1/4 tank
Good luck

Fixed it... read post #4. Does anyone know if the front tank mounts have been a common point for rusting out?
