You might check the shifter linkage for loose parts.

i checked the linkage it is fine.. no prior problems with the tranny, but when i changed the filter and fluid, hoping it would be just that, there was a piece of metal stuck to the magnet, the piece was 2inches by 1 inch

Sounds like you need a new valve body, if the linkages are working fine, but the truck still isn't actually in the gear you've selected then the 'box isn't actually shifting into the right gear.

you'll need to take it to a specialist to have that looked at. vavle bodies are fairly complex.

it also seems like it will go forward in park but i think it is stuck in drive or something.. also when i try to put it in 4 wheel drive it wont go to neutral dfifferential or 4 low because of it is still wanting to go forward while the tranny is suppose to be in neutral

The rear clutch inside the trans is smoked,it welds itself together.

I have a 1994 dodge ram 5.9L v8 2wd with the same exact problem.
its been this way for 7 months now

i had the tranny rebuilt
the tranny fluid and Filter has been changed out 4 times and new fluid put in.
I found no metal in my tranny but when my problem started which is EXACTLY THE SAME AS THIS THREAD. the oil was very very black with lots of shavings on the magnet (looked like the clutch plate and clutch steel material) and black stuff too. very nasty oil. the steels in the back of the trans clutches were bend and completly worn out.

Anyways, Ive been trying to get it working for a long time now. This week I have been playing with the FRONT and REAR Transmission bands that are supposed to correct this problem. If i unscrew the front band enough the van will actually go into NEUTRAL while the linkage is in park. So i was able to push my DODGE RAM backwards which is good when I get it sTuck after driving it around.

Anyhow, I adjusted my bands correctly 72 inch lbs then back off 2 7/8 turns on the front and 72 inch lbs on the rear and backed off 2 turns on the rear.

It didnt work? im in the same jam. Reverse drives forward. park locks but i can feel it nudging forward. Neutral will go forward. and D 2 1 go forward.

maybe my valve body is bad? im not an expert. I rechecked my clutches and steels and they are all brand new and they are not being damage at all.

I know my dad used some LUCAS Transmission STOP SLIP to try and get this transmission to stop slipping! obviously it was slipping because of the completely worn clutch plates that were replaced? that LUCAS Transmission STOP SLIP is some nasty stuff. I think the Lucas stop slip started this whole REVERSE nuetral problem going forward and not going in reverse or neutral. Maybe it cloged up my valve body! thats what some1 told me

How many rear Clutch plates and steels are in the rear clutch plate? Just curious I want to make sure everything was completed in my rebuild on my transmission with the same exact problem.

I know some of the steels / clutches were not used in this complete rebuild kit i gave the mechanic

i found a valve body on ebay for 125 bucks but i dont really want to buy it unless thats what I need to buy! i already spent about $300 on New rebuild parts that are in the transmission that did not correct the Neutral and Reverse DRIVING FORWARD.

I have one note for you! I did read the entire HAYNES manual transmission section. The haynes book states that the transmission BANDS are to be adjust every 30k miles during the transmission service. If the bands are not adjusted. They can cause problems such as this and they can lock up the clutch plates and grind up the clutch pack fast

If I were you i wouldnt be locking 4wd up with your tranmission problem? You'll probably snap a transmission band with that much power locked on all 4 tires!

so you think that the clutches and bands are bad?? there was a piece of metal stuck to the magnet when i took the pan off.. did you have that?

I did not find any large metal pieces. i found alot of shavings from the clutch steels and friction plates. and yes they were completely worn and my fluid was burnt and very disgusting. Since my trans was completely rebuilt already. Im guessing that the mod *2.2 Straight six*on this thread could be right. I might need a new valve body now! maybe that nasty fluid did something bad or a servo is blown. I did not check the servos

i really dont know alot about transmissions.. what are the servos?

my fluid was dark and smelled burned.. i was selling the truck on payments and the guy i sold it to thought he would take it mudding, and got it stuck and ran it til the way it is now..

the rebuild kit shows the diagram of the servo locations on the valve body and has parts to rebuild the servos
