steerming column pivot pins

My steering wheel wobbles quite a bit and after removing the covering i can see the pivot pins are moving along with the wobble.

The dealer sells a pivot pin kit with springs and a few other pieces for about $28.

Has anyone here replaced the pivot pins in thier tilt steering wheel column? I keep hearing something about 4 bolts holding the column that come loose but thats not the problem here that I can see. The pivot pins are not tight at all.

Has anyone dealt with this problem?

its a 94 grand am with tilt steering of course.

Thier are 2-3 bolts holding up the steering column probly need to loosen those while you work.

The pins can be replaced if the pin's hole(s) are not egg shaped, which then the whole swivle joint will need replaced.
The pins are pressed in with a hammer and punch, should knock them out pretty easily.

You also might have to loosen the swivle at the firewall to pull the shaft up to work onthe bad swivle.

Hope that helps.

Thanks.

I have a feeling the holes will probably be worn out causing the wobble as it wobbles quite a bit but its to the point of bugging me.

Any chance theres a writeup somewhere on this task? I have the fsm for my year but it doesnt go into great detail on this.

Here is one of the pins I removed, Since Ive never seen one before does this one look normal?

The holes dont look out of shape but I can see the pin moving when the steering wheel wobbles.

I dont want to spend $30 on the pins from the dealer if its going to be a waste. I cant find any auto parts store that carrys them or will even attempt to order them.

This really funny but I had the same exact 94 Grand Am GT and one of the pins came out. Well I was trying to see what I could do to fix it. Go to the hardware store and buy a very cheap MM socet set. I actually took one of the sockets that would fit the hole ( I don't remember which one) and popped that in there. Then I took a piece of electrical tape and covered the hole.

I hope it works out for you!

New pivot pins didnt help. As stated it looks like the holes are not round any more and are allowing the pin to move.

Guess ill live with it. Or just stick a bolt and nut in there and live without the tilt feature.
