2000 blazer front cv joint to diff seals

How do you removethe seals on the front cv to differential? The shaft sticks out about 1/2 in and just flops around without the cv joint in. is that normal?

I can't picture it, I need more info. The front shaft seals are pressed in. On the passenger its pressed in the shaft tube, on the driver side, the plate is unbolted off the differential cover itself and then the seal can be pressed out.
