Air Conditioning...

okay i bought a camaro, the guy says the air conditioning worked great. well now the compressor isnt getting any signal to kick on so, i was wondering is someone with a camaro 82-92 would mind checking what kind of voltage the plug at the ac compressor is getting. i would really appreciate it. i just want to see if i can rig it with a switch from a 12v source to kick on. i dont wanna risk frying the solenoid that controls it by experimenting with it. thanks

Do this instead. Start the car and turn on the A/C. Remove the 2 wire plug from the accumulator (big silver can). This is the low pressure switch. Put a jumper across the 2 pins on the harness side. If the compressor engages and runs, pull the jumper and get the system serviced, you are low on freon. Do NOT run the AC compressor like this for more than a few seconds as you can damage the compressor.

His car uses R12. Even if he had a gauge set he can't get the freon unless he has a license.

If it uses R12 it needs to be converted. If you use R12 you are a glutton for punishment, that stuff is super expensive and hard to find.

Where have you been? R12 is extremely easy to get. Do a search on Ebay. As far as the R12 license, that's even easier. Just pay $15 and get yours. Once you get it you can buy all you want, even at your local dealer or autoshop. http://macsw.org/certification.php (http://macsw.org/certification.php) or www.epatest.com (http://www.epatest.com)
Why would anyone want to convert? If your low on oil do you do a complete engine rebuild? No, you just add more oil.... Get real, if your low, add some more R12 freon...It's that simple...

R12 sucks. It costs more and is more harmful to the planet than other types of refrigerant that can be used in its place. A less expensive more global friendly alternative makes perfect sense.

There will be nothing colder than R12. It is the best.
People keep saying there helping the "planet" by converting, but their wrong. Lots of people without license will just vent their freon than taking it in to be reclaimed. If they do take it in to be reclaimed, what do they do with it? They clean it and sell it again. It's not like their purging the universe of R12. I much rather have someone add a can to their system rather than venting into the atmosphere.
Please tell me which freon is colder that R12....

Ive converted and charged many r-12 based systems. Most of wich when properly charged and having the proper amount of oil in the system can work just fine. Ive taken r-12 compressors on their death bed and pulled the temp off the dash vents down to the 40's fahrenheit in 70's-80's GM's on 134, wich is plenty cold.

If im working on a A/C system that has pressure, i call a professional to come recover it from the system before i start ripping into it. If the system is low it probably had or has a slow leak, meaning if you charge it with r-12 knowing its leaked it out before you know your polluting. Unless im mistaken if you get caught venting freon into the atmosphere you get a big fat ticket and get to stand in front of a judge and looked down on for the no good bastard you are.

which is exactly why im using r12 instead of converting, when you use anything else but r12 on an r12 system it doesnt work worth a damn, i mean, the air is cool, but not cold, im gonna try and make sure that any leaks are fixed

Not everybody wants or needs a license to dispense R-12, just like all car guys don't want or need to be an ASE certified technician. Most people would probably like to buy what is the least expensive and most readily available product on the market(for now that would be R-134a). There are good reasons R-12 is not available to the public without a license. As for the analogy about an engine being low on oil and rebuilding it, there is no parallel. Would you still put leaded gasoline in an older car even if it were more expensive, not environmentally responsable, and more difficult to get? The general population would not. We work with what is available, what is cheap, and most of the time we do what is right. Get real!

eh.. ive had a R134 converted 88 bird. it was goddamn cold! and i live in hawaii.. i couldnt run that bad boy at full cold or else id freeze.. im sure if done right, R134 conversion is just as good.. well, maybe not AS good, but damn good enough. not to mention cheaper and easier to get a hold of..

Better watch that "cheap" R-12, it is mostly propane. The scammers have been cutting R-12 with propane since it was banned to maximize their profit.
