2K Civic vs. assed up mustang

OK, so I'm going to buy lugs for my new rims today and i'm sitting behind some early 80s mustang that looked like it sat in someones driveway for a few years. It was disrepaired and rusted and the paint was chipped and the whole car was all beat up and I didn't pay much attention to it... until I saw the monster tach in front. I thought MAYBE it was a rally car or something. he had gauges along the side and a big ol' shift light.
Then when we get to 2 lane part I get up next to him and he's got like 19s in the back and 16s in the front. We get on the line at a red light and when he stops he actually kills the car and it goes lurching forward (like when you accidentally let off the clutch or don't know what you're doing... or both). Then after starting it back up he tries throwing revs at me. I look over and him and his friend are staring expectantly, so I rev back and the light turns. In first gear he was already at my back tire and going into third he was a good 2 cars behind me.
Worse: I was only halfass racing because with my old tires (one's down to the metal strips underneath the rubber in a spot or 2) I was afraid I was gonna pop 'em, thus being the reason I havent raced for a month but this was just too good to pass up and as long as I didn't do a burnout coming off the line I'd be good. I was getting into the turning lane and was prepared to give him a thumbs up but of course, he does the ever-popular flyby, after which he slowed just enough to drop a gear and squeel his tires right after he passes me. As though that would help him win the race? Or maybe just boost his battered self esteem.

Based on your list of mods you must have raced a 4cyl. Good job anyway.

I'd be willing to bet I did. Althought he did have dual exhausts, which, from my understanding, means 6 cyl. But that may not be true in context to Mustangs...

All the early 80s mustangs where underpowerd. For 1981 the 2.3 4cyl made 88 hp. There was also an inline six option 3.3 liter with 91 hp and the 302 liter v8 only had 119hp.

I don't think any of the pony wars cars had banner hp numbers in the 80's. Pretty much a black eye for us all...

Its really kind of pathetic. Maybe those where good power figures for the day? Doubt it since the days of big blocks with big hp where not that long before. The 80s where bad years anyway, big hair and bad colors. Glad I was to little to remeber much.:D

ouch. I knew 80's stangs were bad but that's just disgraceful. Although in honesty most all of the cars in the 80s suck. Well, gee. Most everything in the 80s sucked. Some of the music was cool tho.
And about the fast for their day? Right after the big muscle car detroit iron era? doubtful.

Yeah, nothing good came out of the 80's, except maybe....well, nothing. Everyone was just trying to make it through the Reagan years...

The 80s are when emmissions took their toll on all cars. It greatly reduced the power they could produce.
Good kill though. To bad he was a sore loser.

A stock Delorean is not going to whoop many cars out there (beyond civic types) but it will turn more heads then most all cars.
Grand Nationals were monsters that few people knew (or still know) about.

I have a friend in KC with a GNX that is pretty badass. On the back window it says, "You've just been passed by a girl".

The late 80's five litre mustangs dominated the streets in those days, and the modded ones still do so today.
The Grand National and Turbo Regals were/are bad ass cars. Exhaust, bigger injectors and raised boost with traction has put those cars in the 11's. Thats about $1000 in mods.
As for the original kill story, good job on beating a 4 cylinder mustang.
That "mustang" owner must be a ricer at heart if he actually had all that shit in his car.

The 80's were some good times, well at least teh late 80's anyways. The early 80's were only good for music, like Iron Maiden, hell yeah. But the later 5.0 litre Mustangs are quick as hell. I own an 87 and it is amazing how much power you can get outta only a few mods. As for the Grand National, I wouldn't line up with one of those, turboed and 13's out teh factory, sounds like a whippin to me. My friend has one, his dad owns a speedshop, and he loves it.
