The only R32 skyline that was brought out by Nissan Aus. was the GTR, everything else is either a private or commercial import. It is obvious that your dad either drives a holden or a falcon, cause what he considers a Jap import is a toyota camry. Just buy one, beleive me you or your dad won't be disappointed. Have a look at the SDU site as mentioned above.
Cheers big ears,

Jap Import R32 = Cheap Parts
i.e RB20DET Engine Package (ECU TURBO Whole Lot) $around $2000-$2500
Just the Engine $1000-1200 if you blow one.. which is quite cheap
gear box $500 bucks...
umm use the Oil filters from the RB30 Motor (VL Commodore)
Brakes from a 200SX... oxygen sensor from EF-EL Falcoon...
I can't see how you dad says they are crap..
Sure some Jap Imports are crap because parts are hard to get and expensive... But the Skyline is a reliable beast ..
I've owned a VS Series 2 V8 Commodore with IRS and it didn't like a hammering.. PLUS the chassis are so twisty.. jack the car up open the door then try shutting it again.. OR.. with Hard suspension drive down a drive way that is a little steep and have it on a slight turn and you will hear the door rubbers squelching just a little as the chassis twist..
GO The Skyline.. Can't find a part go to nissan.. after all the GTR was released in AUS....

Listen to your dad, he seems to know what he is talking about.
But seriously, R32's are great, best decision I ever made. But getting a turbo insured for some one under 25 is imposible. I have gone through so much crap to even get third party. SO I suggest a non-turbo (GTS) or even a non-turbo Silvia (Q).

I havn't had a problem getting insurance Full comp for an R32 GTS-T!
I am just 22 (9th November) and just cars quoted me for rating 2 $1500
rating 1 is $1300 and over 25 is $1000....
I don't think a turbo car for your first car is really the go but..
My first car was a TE 250 4 speed manual Cortina with an Alloy Head, 350 Holly and mild camm.. would pull 14.5 Second quater..
Gear box rebuilds no worries around 80 - 110 .. but the ol' single rails are bullet proof apart from their selectors...

my dad had hesitations about me buying a jap car, cos he is a holden man all the way, but nevertheless i bought an r30, now he thinks its the best of all 6 cars we have, and sneakily takes it out driving when im asleep instead of his cars!
so i say go for it, and prove your dad wrong!!

I am some ones Dad and I have owned three "grey" turbo Skylines - well actually two of them have been black. I have owned and driven a lot of cars/bikes/trucks and for me Skylines represent great value. Performance, brakes, handling, fuel economy and they are something different.
The only drawback I guess is insurance.
As mentioned there are non turbo versions available.
Tell your Dad to contact me if he needs to be enlightened, he can be a passenger next track day.

I have owned 3 commodores, a laser, a corrolla and I've just turned 22. If you look at the build quality of the skyline compared to the above cars, you would by one every time. My mum has a VS commodore, it almost falling to bits and it only 5 years old. I used to be a holden man, but after owning such a well built car, I wouldn't go back to an ordinary car like a commodore.
Just my thought of the day!
