automatic...

I am familiar with automatic gearboxes though i have never owned one in the actual car. I've tried it once for a few kilometres but there was something missing... :-) It is just one letter that puzzles me - the L. Can someone please explain to me what does L in shifting scheme stand for?

the is 'Low Gear". Usually it locks the tranny in first for either added power (well, at least in the sense that it wont shift to a taller gear) or for engine braking when decending long steep grades.

You would use L when u need power going up really steep roads, or going down steep roads(using the engine to keep the speed down). You would rarely need it with an automatic, even 2 is rarely used. D(Drive) and N(Neutral) are basically the only ones people use with automatics.

Yeah, with cars these days you really don't even need to use the R(Reverse) gear anymore
