ok.... so I was taking my engine and tranny out to clean it up, fix oil leak, put on shiny timing chain cover, and repaint engine bay with semi-gloss instead of flat black.

I now realize my mistake.... I wasnt thinking properly.

http://bengal.missouri.edu/~klm217/update/bottom_parts.JPG

my mistake:
pulled engine and tranny. while engine was being held by hoist and tranny was supported with blocks...tried to remove tranny while engine was a little to high in the air. upon loosening the tranny the input shaft bent from the weight of the tranny not being completely supported.

this explains why i was having such a hard time rotating the engine.
i bent 2 flywheel turners and the (high torque) starter doesnt even budge the flywheel...
...and this is with no compression (spark plugs out) and no spring tension (rockers losened)!

I also completely cracked and broke the bellhousing (over one bolt only) by trying the put the tranny back on, flush... which a bent input shaft wouldnt allow. Nice! :(

So it appears that I need to remove the oil pan, remove mains and rod bearings to get the crank out, which will allow me to disconnect the tranny. sucks!

I havent verifyed the bent input shaft (cuz i cant get to it) but Im pretty sure about it.

any advice?

i know i need to place all bearing and caps back in their same spot on reassembly. any other advice for someone who has always had a machine shop do his bottom-end work?

Other: I'm also adding the Zexel-Torsen rear end, 3.73 gears, 3" driveshaft and painting the underbody. lots of work to do...!

Kevin-- You ever get rid of that V6 exhaust on your car and get some good stuff under there?

nope. it's still there and pissin me off! remember, it was get bike or finish car. so it's gonna take some time.

thats a big leak dam, did you ever get that timing cover?
apparently, I didnt put teflon tape on the crank pulley bolt and it looks like oil came out there and flew all over (just about everything). and now its caked on everything, with dirt, pretty thick.

I got the cover though, you can see it in the pics.

oddly, the oil drain plug is leaking too, which is where all that oil on the ground is coming from. it's got a small dent in it where the plug is.

That sucks, good to know someone else's luck is as good as mine!

My advice would be to slow down, and take your time when doing the larger jobs.

Is that a new ring and pinion you are putting in, also?

yes sir. 3.73s. I'm sending them off to get cryogenically treated this week.

Update: so I got the tranny off. Just got pissed off one day and turned the balancer as hard as I could (thought I was going to give myself a hernia). got it to turn, but also got my finger crushed between the balancer and the timing cover at the same time. I was happy and in severe pain at the same time.

put new on new oil pan, timing cover, cleaned up grease/dirt, painted intake and headers with different hitemp paint (and baked/heat cycled it up to 600 degrees), painted tranny.

next steps: fix/inspect tranny, clean/repaint engine bay, paint underbody, add rear gears and driveshaft.

Philly, I should be in Tampa in about a month.
