Trouble starting 99 Sportage

This is my wifes truck, and she has complained on occasion of engine surge, and intermittent Check Engine Lights....the other day she was driving along and it died on her all together....and we have been unable to restart it ever since. I checked the whole fuel side...pump, filter and relays...and now Im beggining to believe it is and electrical or a spark issue....Whats the easiest way to check spark on this truck, (I miss a good ole distributor cap and wires) and what other tests or troubleshooting steps can I run. It turns over fine, but does not give a whisper of firing...any help is appreciated

sounds like classic symptoms of a slipped or broke timing belt. a very common problem with the sportage. replace and it should run. the surge may be a dirty maf but after you get it running take the sportage to autozone to get codes read and post them here .

What is engine mileage? past 70,000 miles, as mentioned, timing belt is a necessary maintenance item..
