Does anyone know how many different versions of this kit Tamiya made?
I have the Rothmans one and the Newman one, and on the box's there are pictures of other 956's eg the Canon one and I think the Kenwood one, but I have never seen these ones for sale.
Did Tamiya actually make these ones, or do I just buy the decals separately?

They made
24047 Rothmans Porsche 956
24049 Newman Porsche 956
24232 Cannon Porsche 956
You can also get quite a range of decals for the 956
here's the link to HLJ with the search results

They also made a 956 in the Tamtech radio control series I believe which was 1/24. That may have had a selection of decals available?

Thanks for that, I wish they would re release them like they did with a bunch of other Le Mans cars, theres lots of interesting liveries for the 956/962 cars.

They just re-released them 2 or 3 years ago. That's why many of them are around on ebay. Not too difficult to get i'd say.
There are also decals available from Speedline, MS-Hobbies and others plus many detail parts for the 956 and 962.

Tamiya released the '87 Kenwood 962C as a limited release, but inside you find the 956 parts with Modeler's decal. The box features a see-through illustration, and there's a fine print in Japanese, saying that it's the 956 kit with Kenwood decals.
Modeler's released the '88 Kenwood 962C, but it's also Tamiya's 956 parts with Modeler's own decals and a box, which has a color photo of the actual car.
Ben Hobby released the Layton House 962C, but again the parts are from Tamiya 956 with the body molded in bright green.
