1997 GTP Fuel Pump

Anyone have an idea of how long a fuel pump will last. I had mine replaced at about 140,000 miles along with the resistor. Of course I was about 4 hours from home when this went out. I now have 268,000 on the car and when I drove to work this morning it was fine. Went to leave at noon and there is no pressure from the valve on the fuel rail. Besides fuel pump and basic maintence and power windows working intermittenly, the car is still running strong.

Fuel pump life will vary depending on a lot of issues. Personally, I would check the fuel pressure regulator. It may be bad instead of the fuel pump especially if it is the original. This could be why you have fuel pressure in the morning and not at noon. It is much cheaper and easier to change than a fuel pump so I would give it a shot and see what happens.

regulator didn't work so i took out the fuel pump and hooked it up to a battery, all i got was a bunch of sparking from the connectors. Also, the fuel filter was plugged, would that have caused the pump to go out?

Yes! The pump works too hard and will damage it due to overheating. The sock on the end of the pump is designed to keep grit out of the pump so put a new one on and clean the tank before reinstalling the new pump.

is it possible to just replace the pump and not the whole assembly. i called around town and every parts store says they arent servicable. any truth in that?

You can purchase a pump only other than the entire assembly and replace just the pump although I don't recommend it. The assemby is more expensive but if works best. Most of the folks I know of who just replaced the pump had other issues after installation.
