91 Explorer Transmissons

Hello all,

I’m in the process of purchasing a 91 explorer 4x4 , the truck is clean inside and out.
The downfall is, the transmission is shot. My question is, what year and other Ford/Mazda models will work for the 91 explorer 4x4? The local bone yard will provide the donor and just need to know what else would suffice.
The engine is 4.0, not sure what type of transmission they used other than it is AT.

oh, another thing, how hard would it be to convert it over to MT? Is it doable or not even go there!

A4LD, Do not forget, torque converter will click 3 times before completely seated... not twice and make sure to remove plug that salvage yard will put in vent tube...time and money wasted on both here.:banghead:
