91 honda Civic with AT - noticed that the speedometer (dash) was not working; so I removed the speedometer cable from the transmission and noticed that the pinion/key is missing from the cable assy (stuck in the housing)
Cant really pull on it with long nose pliers (not small enough) and a magnet doesnt work. Theres a 10mm bolt/lock tab beside the housing where the speedometer attaches on - I removed it, but cant seem the take out the housing.
Does that housing come off? any ideas how to remove the pinion thats stuck on the gear?

well theres a litle rubber boot for starters that covers the hole thing pull tha up. next youll have to pull the groved portion of the cabled outta the gear. its gotta grab to something. plus theres a locking cotter pin style clip or something along those lines. like a c clip pull that out to. and it should all come free. thats really all there is.

LOL...
The key or pinion on the end of the speedometer is still stuck in the gear - NOT the speedometer cable... . I removed the speedometer cable, boot, cotterpin...etc and all; only to find that the key or pinion (end of the speedo cable) is still stuck in the transmission.
My problem is removing the stuck end part of the speedo cable from the transmission.

you might have to get a pair of vice grips or something to try and break it loose or something. it sounds likes its a little nastied in there.

The speed sensor does come out after the 10mm bolt and hold down plate is removed, however, if the car has seen even one day of rain it will be a nightmare to remove. Those sensors rust so tightly that I'm surprised Honda ever bothered with the bolt and plate in the first place. In some instances where the cable damaged the sensor I've had to heat the case with a torch (the end of the sensor is plastic :-)), or disect the trans and force it out from the inside. Oh, by the way, DO NOT stick a pry tool in the slot where the hold down plate locked in the sensor because the sensor is made of brittle aluminum that loves to break. The other beautiful part is where Honda decided that a large elaborate motor mount bracket needed to go right next to the sensor ( as you can tell I hate these sensors). So long as the funky shaped lock clip is pulled out of the sensor the tip should be free then with alot of effort a pair of tweezers, pick tool, air hammer or bomb the tip should come out. GOOD LUCK

Yeah it took me two days to remove mine. I could have sworn there were other bolts. It took me a huge pry-bar screwdriver and lots of patience, muscle, and cursing to get that bastard out...
