Checked for spark no spark. Put in a new ICM and still no spark. CHecked timing-ok, timing belt ok. Fuel pump ok-it primes and has pressure. Check for injector pulse and no pulse. I swapped the ecm relay with the ac relay and didnt do anything. I checked ground by ecm and starter solenoid and there ok and clean. I checked for power to ecm and it has power at 3 spots. I think its the ecm because the wiring diagram says the ecm grounds injectors and ignition coil. ANy thoughts, a new ecm is 310.00 and no junkyards have them locally...

Any Check Engine Light at all? I had idling problem in my previous '83 Ranger 2.3L and it was the ECM? cost me only $110.00 then? I'd discourage you from getting one from the junk yard. Also, is the ICS relay the same type as the AC? If not the test may not apply.

The ac, fuel pump and ecm relay all have the same part #.
I replaced the ecm and still no start. Removed all the grounds on body and frame and cleaned and still same. Cleaned neg/pos battery terminals and battery post and same. I ohm'd out the neg cable from the ecm ground connector to the neg battery cable connector and the ohm is 33 and 46, sounds way to high for a ground cable. ...? Now the guage cluster does not work an the lights for the cluster do not illuminate. I found no codes in the ecm either.

Too high ohmic value for ground. Unless you're reading something else in series with the ground wire. All grounds should have zip resistance with respect to the chassis and the battery. Can you get a hold of an electrical schematic. I believe that one of the Haynes or Chilton Ranger books have electrical scematics which could help.

Well I ohm'd the wires for the cam sensor and some other sensors and found the wire blue, orange at the cam sensor was open to the ecm. Bypassed wire with new one and still didnt start. Every sensor in the engine is getting voltage (even when cranking) and all wires are not open. I am going to put in the new Ignition control module tomorrow and see if that fixes it. When I put it in the first time the cam wire was open so I couldnt properly test the new icm. This car is not making any sense.... grrr wiring sucks..

So put the ICM in and it didnt work, although the car cranks better now. Well I found the problem today. Alldata said the car does NOT have a crank position sensor, only automatic models do. The wiring diagram even said it does not have one. Well I said f-it today and started taking off the viscous fan, crank pulley and timing belt cover (which requires removal of the ac/ps pump bracket bolted to engine) and WALA!!!!! IT has a crank sensor, and the sensor was all busted up. :banghead: No wonder it didnt have any spark or fuel injector pulse. No crank signal = no spark.... Well I'll be putting in a new sensor when it arrives. another 230.00 later!:shakehead

OK so I put the new crank sensor in and still no spark or fuel injector pulse. I ohm'd out every wire for the engine sensors to the ecm, and all the gound wires and they are all ok. Every sensor or part gets 12.5v. The fuel pump still primes and gives good pressure. I tied tripping the crash switch and the fuel pump didnt run, then reset it and the fuel pump ran so I know thats ok. I checked timing on the timing belt and all the marks line up. Doesnt the crank position sensor give the ECM the signal for crank? WHats the purpose of the cam position sensor in this in relation to the spark and fuel inj pulse? How do you remove an ignition switch on theese cars... do the wires run through the center of the steering column? alldata does not show any pictures or give any instructions on replacement.

If it is a Calif vehicle the is a cam position sensor below and behind the alt. Ign switch is located on the steering column operated by a rod. You have to pull off the dach panel a couple of brackets and drop the steering colume down for easier acess. If thats not it email me and I will send you the pages you need out of the factory wiring book
