Band Assembly Question

Hi!
2002 Silverado 1500 Z71 4X4
4L60E Automatic
After sun shell installation and everything back together i have slip in
forward gears. Reverse works fine and electronically everything
seems to be functioning correctly. Switches into all modes (4HI, 4LO and 2HI).
No error codes... My thoughts at this point lean toward possible
band/powerband (i've heard it referred to as either or both) misalignment or not being seated properly.
Does this sound like a feasable explanation for the slippage?
Fluid level is fine so it's not that.
Thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks!
Dave

First of all, I am not a tranny expert. I am just a weekend mechanic type and I have been reading lots about 4L60 and 4L60E, so keep that in mind.
The 2-4 Band is only applied in 2nd and 4th. If the slipping occured only in 2nd or 4th then the issue could be with the band or servo.
What I am not sure of is if the band was adjusted wrong and was too tight, would this cause slipping in forward gears or not.
I don't have the factory manuals in front of me, but this seems to be more related to the fwd clutches slipping or low line pressure causing all forward gears to slip.
If you have a tranny pressure gauge, it would be good to see if you are in spec or not.

I appreciate the reply and i am sure that i am way less of a mechanic than you
are.. heh heh heh...
So, beings that the band is 2/4 and (your maybe thought) about being too
tight don't apply as i know that if anything it would be too loose. Unfortunately
at this point it slips too much to really drive it down the road. I live in a hilly area
and i don't want to get between humps in the road and get stuck.. see what i mean?
Also, not being a real mechanic, i don't have any fancy gauges for special things
so a tranny pressure gauge i don't have. Tons of tools just nothing of that nature.
My situation is that even if i could afford a transmission guy we have none that
have a good reputation around here. Even AAMCO which is 20 miles from me
has a real sucky reputation around these parts for shoddy work and screwing
people so... my best option was the do-it-yerself deal. It can't be nothing real
serious cause it all was good until the sun shell went bye-bye so it has to be
and error on my part somewhere. Reverse (the sun shell deal) is great! Well at
least the reverse part is. Of course I don't know for sure about the overdrive since i
can't drive down the road yet. So i'll do more inquiring and waiting and see what
develops.
Your input is appreciated!!!

I will take a look at the manuals when I get home. It is best not to drive it until it is fixed.

UPDATE: Actually, i rechecked everything and the slipping is in ''D'' only.
If i manually place the shift in 1,2,3 or R in any mode (2HI/4LO/4HI) there is
no slipping. ONLY in ''D'' Maybe this helps narrow things down?

I know that it's not the greatest source of info but was reading my Haynes manual re: PNP
switch. It says ''The PNP switch on these models is a part of the transmission range
switch which performs many gear related functions for the Powertrain Control Module.''
What if this switch/control is not adjusted properly? Could this cause like an out of
sync thing and make it slip in ''D'' only?
Again... a part that the helper discombooberated so it wasn't marked before removal.
Just ballparking here... Any thoughts?

If you put it in "3" does it start out in 1st, shift into 2nd then shift into 3rd without any slipping?
I have a factory manual for 1996 that covers the 4L60E. I also have the factory manuals for 2000 but that does not have the same level of detail w.r.t. the 4L60E.
Looking at this from a functional view, the differences between being in "D" versus 1st, 2nd or 3rd is that the Overrun clutch is applied for 1st, 2nd or 3rd but not when in "D".
I don't know if this is your issue or not but it is a difference between when it slips vs when it doesn't.
You may also post on this forum http://www.700r4l60e.com/forum/
The moderator on that forums knows the 4L60E really well. I am sure he knows what to check for.
Post back if you make any progress.
