I have a 98 blazer and it will no longer shift out of first gear. I dont know for sure if my tranny is shot or if my clutch is shot. The fluid is brown and smells burnt. My roommate did a tranny flush a couple of weeks ago and there wasn't any metal shards in the pan so we are both thinking the clutch is burned up. Any other ideas?

How is the fluid level?
Got fluid in it?
Any check engine lights?
What engine and transmission or repair history?
What kind killer flush what kind of fluid and cleaner and was the filter changed?

What clutch are you referring to? Unless I am picking up the wrong vib, this is an automatic which means there are multiple clutches. Usually when clutches start going in an automatic you will notice slipping when it changes gears. I really don't know much about these tranys so can't help much. Good luck troubleshooting, I know how frustrating it can be.

Does it back up or only low gear?
What is the code no?
Have you had it on a good transmission capable scanner?

Sounds like the tranny is cooked, it needs a rebuild. I would still, like MT said, get it on a scanner and see what its doing. This will give you an idea of what needs attention inside the transmission.
Good Luck!
