93 Suburban oil filter housing leak

172k miles. Just developed a significant oil leak from just above the oil filter. It appears to be coming from where the aluminum oil filter housing connects to whatever above it that it connects to. I can see oil running around the circular groove of the connection & then dripping down. I have the official GMC factory shop manual & there is no detail on that part of the engine nor any instructions on replacing anything other than the oil pump. I've seen some threads here about this or something similar where there was a gasket/seal kit mentioned but no info on how to actually do the job. Any further information on this problem & the way to fix it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not a hard job, just a little messy. The reason it is messy is that oil cooler lines have to be disconnected from the oil filter housing and it is just a messy job when the oil leaks out of the lines.

By the way, Fel-Pro makes a gasket set that contains everything you need for the job. Part Number is ES 72671.

- Remove Oil Filter and Oil Cooler Lines (Note, to remove the line you need to squease both tabs of the plastic quick disconnect. It helps to push the line towards the oil filter housing, then squease the tabs and pull the line out. You can spin the lines to help align the tabs since it can be hard to get at both due to being so close the block).
- Remove the oil filter housing. IIRC, there is an O-ring on the housing that was the cause of my leak. There is also a gasket between the block and an adapter. In my case, the gasket was hard as a rock and hard to remove. Some gasket remover (spray) really helped here.
- Reassemble in reverse order. I used some gasket sealer on the new gasket and be sure to lube the new O-ring with oil.

Update on this thread for anyone with similar situation. I bought the gasket kit (gasket & O Ring) for < $4 at the GMC dealer. It is a fairly straightforward but messy job. The bolts holding the oil filter adapter are 1/4" hex head set screws (1/4" "allen wrench" required). The only difficult part was getting the old gasket off which took me awhile to scrape off entirely. I have oil cooler lines which hold the adapter up after removing the bolts but get in the way a little but you can work around them.
Hopefully good for another 180k miles now. No way to do this job without dripping a lot of oil so be prepared.
