2000 Blazer Torque Convertor

I've been dealing with the torque convertor clutches slipping after going into overdrive from 1500-2000 rpm after an extended highway drive and think I may finally get it fixed. It's the only issue the truck has. It has 130K on it so I wouldn't want to go beyond the convertor. If so, I'd trade it in before putting out more money. I'm pretty sure it's the convertor since if you lightly touch the brake, it stops and doesn't slip. My question is, any ideas on a ball park range for that repair. I was told around $500 but that was a year ago. Thanks for any estimates or responses in advance.

Its not the convertor thats the problems, 9.5 times out of 10, its the worn valve body thats the problem. Take a look at this website http://www.transmissionspecialty.com/parts/DM/4L60-E.htm

This is usually what needs to be fixed and all should be well again. Driving it with a slipping convertor will overheat it, and cause it to fail prematurely, so if you plan on driving it, you need to get it repaired.
Good Luck!

A second shop mentioned the valve body issue on Blazers but it's not throwing out any current codes which they said it should if it's the valve body.

I'm taking it to that same shop next week so I guess they'll check on that issue again when they get it in there before doing any convertor replacement. They're going to check the old history and see if it's ever produced the code they're looking for. I kind of hope it is the valve body because they said that repair runs around $270 which would much cheaper than a convertor replacement.

BTW, if it is the valve body and not the convertor, any guess as to why a touch of the brake pedal causes it to stop occurring? I was told the torque convertor clutches disengage when you brake, so one way to get an idea if it is the convertor clutches would be to touch the brake pedal when it's happening and see if it stops the jerking.

I'm at 130K on it so I really just want to try to get through the summer and winter and next Spring I'll be getting another Chev, maybe a Tahoe.

Any thoughts on the realiablity of the New Trailblazers? Do they have the same issue as the Blazers, front wheel hubs, fuel pumps, vibration at high speeds? I looked at a Trailblazer last year but they seem cheap and plastic compared to my 2000 Blazer.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate your help ...

Hi I just read the GM service bulletin for the 1870 code and it said it's possible to have the valve body problem but no code. It needs to occur on two consecutive ignition cycles before it produces the 1870 code so I hope that is my problem. I'll let you know what the shop says this week.
