So after reading the 10 favorite bands thread, I noticed that most of the bands listed were heavy metal bands. What is it with heavy metal that men seem to like so much?

I like heavy metal on occasion because it sometimes works as a "stress reliever" for me. The speed, the "noise", sometimes the lyrics help relieve stress or get you "going", ready to tackle a big project or something similar. The thing is, I'm more in tune to the heavy metal of the '70s and '80s. The stuff that is considered heavy metal now is different than what I grew up with, so I am not as much into the modern stuff as the stuff of the past. It's something that is different than the mainstream music that is usually played and there is something about the "force" that it evokes when it's played. (It's kind of hard to put into words, it's more like an 'experience'.)

Define heavy metal.
Yea, it's a bit difficult to define Heavy Metal. There are just so many new bands and sounds.

I think Hard Rock helps to distinguish it from the Soft Rock or Pop Rock if you will.

One thing I've noticed, and a radio DJ pointed it out the other morning when they played the new Velvet Revolver song off their upcoming album. He went back after the song finished and played the part were Slash went off in his usual guitar style, and said "Boys and Girls, that right there is what we call a guitar solo. This is what use to occur in almost every rock song, back when the musicians actually knew how to play their instruments."

I started cracking up, but also thought it was ironic b/c I had thought the same thing during the song.

But my point is, the Hard Rock bands, seem to have some sort of a guitar solo from time to time.

I just like the sound of it more than anything else. 99% of the mainstream crap you hear today requires no musical talent whereas metal generally requires you to know what you're doing if you want to look competent.

Also good for stress relieving and/or getting you into an aggressive mood. I always throw on Machine Head before a rugby game and it helps.

Every since my dad brought home The Best of The Doors tape way back in the day, I have loved nothing more in rock music than a good guitar. Since the guitar is metal's weapon of choice, I listen to it a lot.

That, the power, raw emotion, and "wall of sound" is what makes metal stand out. And the more talented and dynamic the performance, the better. :ylsuper:

Heavy Metal is the result of the underground 1970's movement to create darker, deeper music that people revolted against to prevent another Elvis Prestley like fad.

Heavy Metal is derived from Blues and Rock and Roll but use distinctive sounds to differ from the Hard Rock period of the early 1970's.

These sounds include tube amps with high gain and high cut off's to create a distorted effect, the use of power cords and minor and modal scales for lead work shone the other end of the Hendrix period.

Black Sabbath have been known to be labeled as the first Heavy Metal mainstreem act.

Anyway, What is it with people liking hip/hop? what is it with people liking Emo rock (fuckin' a! WHY!?)... Metal? its fucking brutal, thats why. I respect the talent involved in the music, i lust for the energy that surges out from it, i can feel the chaos it stirs... I just love metal. That "10 favorite Bands" thread sucked, cuz i can't break it down, so i went mostly the Progressive genre route with Tool, King Crimson, and Floyd... but name my 10 favorite Metal bands? Too many, but lets see what pops up:

Nevermore
Slayer
Deicide
Wintersun
Kreator
Amon Amarth
Death
Opeth
Cannibal Corpse
In Flames

That's a broad range within the genre, like death, black, thrash, power, progressive, symphonic... metal has a lot of sub-genres
