Car shut off while driving, starter not engaging.

I'm really kinda screwed and need more help. I was driving at 70 with cruise control and the car just shut off. I was in 5th gear and when it shut off I don't recall the engine turning over or skipping at all and it should since it was in gear, I think? I tried starting it a few times, but it was on the side of the interstate at 5PM, so the noise was way too much. I got it towed to my house, tried to start it and just got the starter whir. No turning over or anything. I read some other posts and I think it was mikelb saying he had a similar noise and a wire was just disconnected. I tried to pop the clutch to start it but it didn't work. So...any clues? Battery's fine, starter "works..ish" I'm stuck.
One more thing to add: If I try to start the car while it's in gear it will lurch forward like its supposed. So it's like it will engage when in gear but not when out of gear. Or that's what it seems like anyways.
